Awesome Celebrity of the Day: Christian Bale’s Summer of Being Awesome continues with a heartwarming story out of Ohio. Four-year-old Jayden Barber, who has terminal bone cancer, received a superhero welcome August 23rd in his hometown of Boardman Township, complete with a Bat Signal, Bat Mobile — in the form of a $200,000 Maserati — and an appearance by the caped crusader himself.

In even more awesome news, Jayden’s cancer has since been declared to be in remission, which allowed the big screen Batman to fly him out to Disneyland — a trip which included lunch at the exclusive Club 33.

The images really convey what he represented to so many different people from different backgrounds and social classes. He was hope.

Many of us in America believed that that President John F. Kennedy was nurturing a renewed belief in the concept of government as an enabler for all its citizens instead of an acquiescent handmaiden to the privileged and the powerful. Before he was able to instill that as a working principle in our society he was gunned down by an assassin. Five years later when Bobby rose to try to reestablish a government of hope, the hearts of Americans quickened and excitement flared. Then tragedy struck again.

The blow was monumental. Hope-on-the-rise had again been shattered and those in most need of hope crowded the tracks of Bobby’s last train, stunned into disbelief, and watched that hope trapped in a coffin pass and disappear from their lives.

“Without Medicaid, Anabelle Linzey, 2, wouldn’t be able to live at home with her parents and sister, said her mother Katherine: “These are the programs that allow families to be families.”

Jerry Inman knows his wife, Debbie, had been sick for more than a decade and could have died at any time. But he also knows the end finally came at age 50 just 13 days after Tennessee dropped her from Medicaid, making it impossible to afford the medicines that had kept her aneurysm in check for a dozen years.

Tuesday marked seven years since Inman, a 72-year-old retired salesman in Nashville, lost her. Debbie led an active life despite the aneurysm, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, high blood pressure and depression, Inman said. He believes she wouldn’t have died that day, that way, in so much pain, if the state hadn’t taken away TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid plan, from Debbie and 170,000 poor Tennesseans.

“After she passed away, you know, everything just went sour,” Jerry Inman told the Huffington Post by telephone from the Waffle House where he eats breakfast every morning. “I miss her like it was yesterday. I can’t believe it’s been seven years.”

Millions more poor families face risks to their health, and financial devastation, under a plan backed by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to slash federal spending on Medicaid. A version of the proposal authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Romney’s running mate, would cut the Medicaid budget by $810 billion over a decade starting next year…”
