Important story you may have missed: Adam Serwer explains what Monday’s Boston terror case verdict case means for civil liberties:
[B[y convicting Mehanna of material support for terrorism based on his online activities, the prosecution may have established a path through which the government can throw people in prison on terrorism charges for expressing abhorrent opinions, even if the individual in question has no direct ties to a terrorist organization.

CBZ: I think this might be a repost, but I can’t be sure, so here it is (again?) just in case.
Clearly this was destined to become one of my all time favorite viral videos.

reagan-was-a-horrible-president:
This morning at 8:45am a peaceful Occupy Melbourne Protester was violently stripped of her protest costume and disgarded on the ground in her bra and panties. The individual in question was part of the Occupy Melbourne protest and was dressed in a protest costume made from a converted tent. The significance of the costume was to hightlight restrictions placed on protesters staging a 24/7 protest in Flagstaff Gardens.
The protester was surrounded by at least 4 Melbourne City Council officers and 8 Victorian police officers. Her movement was restricted by the formation of officers surrounding her and she was subsequently restrained as officers proceeded with aggressively removing her costume. At each stage she declared that she did not consent or feel comfortable with the actions of the council and police officers, stating that this was a sexual assault.”This is not consensual’.
Her requests and declarations were ignored as officers continued to rip and jossle her costume and person. A knife was requested and used by MCC Officers as the Protest Costume was cut from her body. The remaining severed costume was violently torn from her body while the protester herself was disgarded, semi-naked and crying on the ground as Vic police and MCC officers walked away with the costume.NO EFFORT was made to assess her health or welling after the incident.
Wrong. just wrong. What the FUCK were these fucking cops (pigs) afraid of?

Seriously America .. WTF ?
The latest move in the remorseless shift to police-state America came when the Senate voted last Tuesday to effectively declare the entire USA a ”battleground” where U.S. military forces can operate with impunity, with the unchecked power to arrest, interrogate and detain U.S. citizens. Yes, you or one of your loved ones could be ‘disappeared’ to Guantanamo to be locked up for life without trial or due process if your elected representatives get their way.
So clearly there must be an overwhelming, imminent threat of terrorism on a truly massive scale for the Senate to want to impose what is effectively military law on America ? Well no. Quite the opposite in fact. Did you know that in 2010 only 15 American private citizens died from terrorism. And that’s not even in America. That’s worldwide with almost all the deaths occurring in dangerous areas of Afghanistan, Iraq and Uganda.
In the same period far more Americans were killed by lightning strikes (29) and by dog bites (34) than by terrorists. In fact, your risk of dying in any plausible terrorist attack is vastly lower than your risk of dying in a car accident, by walking across the street, by drowning, in a fire, by falling, or by being murdered.
Your risk of being shot by accident or in a stupid argument is enormously greater too, with over 30,000 Americans every single year shooting themselves or each other. You even have more chance of being shot by your local cops than of dying at terrorist hands. That’s the unarguable reality rather than the Senates fantasy.
And while we’re on the subject of reality versus fantasy, in the real world every year over 6 million children die of starvation. Needless deaths, in the main, because the rich countries haven’t made a ‘war on poverty’ any kind of priority. There are more important priorities, apparently, like ‘terrorism’.
If you’re a rational kind of person looking at whats going on now in America you have to wonder why. Why this latest attempt to turn America over to military law, why the bone-headed, endless war in Afghanistan, why the hideously unpatriotic and now permanent Patriot Act, why the TSA with their porn-scanners and sexual groping of long-suffering travellers, why the Orwellian surveillance society, why the ever expanding FBI ‘watch-list’ with all its abuses, why the whole repressive and obscenely expensive apparatus of Americas irrational ‘War on Terrorism’ ? Whats it all about ?
Since its clear that this grotesque over-kill is not even remotely proportionate to any realistic threat or risk faced by America, and that much is obvious, what on earth is going on ? And why ?
Seriously America .. WTF ?( * also Glenn Greenwald on the subject .. best explanation I’ve read so far)

[Yarelis Bonilla, five, of Elizabeth in New Jersey, has lymphocytic leukaemia and her best hope is a bone-marrow transplant from a perfect match donor.
Her seven-year-old sister, Gisselle, would fit the bill but she lives in El Salvador and has twice been denied a visa by the US embassy.
Marian Habib, the lawyer representing the family of Yarelis, who was born in the US, said: “It is truly an emergency. This is a race against time.” She said the US embassy in El Salvador has to be convinced that the girl’s life is at risk and that her sister will return to her home country after the transplant.
The family of the girls insisted that the operation cannot be carried out in El Salvador as the country cannot provide the level of medical care required.
“A report from the paediatrics department at Newark Beth Israel Medical Centre described Yarelis’s condition as “life-threatening”….
“ There is often a fear, in cases like this, that the recipient of the visa will not return home,” said Espinal.]this is beyond belief. how? like what is wrong with these people? you rather a little girl die than risk ONE more possible illegal immigrant? i give up. i cant.
This is outrageous. We’ll let the Shah of Iran, who had over 20,000 people killed, seek refuge in the United States and get treatment for cancer but not a little girl for the purposes of donating bone marrow to her sister, a U.S. citizen? These immigration laws have to go.
Contact your Senators. They can put pressure on the State Department to issue humanitarian parole.

“A police officer killed an elderly, deaf and mentally disabled man riding his bicycle by shooting him with a Taser stun gun after he failed to obey instructions to stop.
Roger Anthony, 61, was killed as he made his way home in Scotland Neck, South Carolina, after officers responded to a 911 call about a man who had fallen off his bicycle in a car park.
The caller told dispatchers that the man appeared drunk and that it looked like he had hurt himself.
Officers said they repeatedly told Mr Anthony to get off his bike, but when he didn’t respond, they shocked him.
The state Office of the Medical Examiner hasn’t yet determined a cause of death.
Family members claim Mr Anthony had hearing problems and suffered from seizures. Now they’re considering whether to file a lawsuit against the town.
His brother Michael said: ‘What did they tase him for? It’s hurting me. It’s really hurting me.’”
….just speechless
